suspension check

THE suspension in your vehicle ensures a comfortable and stable ride by absorbing lumps and bumps in the road surface but things don’t go so smoothly when it goes wrong.

Parts in your suspension system will wear over time and you may notice the ride becomes rougher than usual. Worn suspension can reduce your braking distance by 20% so it is essential to get problems checked as soon as possible.

We specialise in the repair and replacement of suspension systems for all makes and models of cars and vans and offer a FREE suspension check to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and safe.

Common Problems

Stability of the Car: If a spring in the suspension has broken, the vehicle maybe lower on one side than the other. Park on a level surface and try the bounce test.Rest your weight on the front or back of the vehicle and pay close attention to how many times the car bounces before it stops. If it continues to bounce more than two or three times, there may well be a problem.

Bumpy Ride: The parts of your suspension system will eventually wear out and no longer absorb bumps and shakes as they should, giving you a bumpier ride. Fluid in your shock absorbers may seep out, which will eventually cause suspension failure. Look at the shock absorbers, which are under the car near the wheels. If they are covered in oil there may be a leak.

Tyre depth: Tyres should wear down evenly and abnormal wear may be a sign of a problem with your suspension. If the inside or outside of a tyre is more worn than the rest a poorly functioning suspension system, or incorrect wheel alignment, could be to blame.

Poor handling: Many things can affect a vehicle’s handling, such as incorrect wheel alignment or poor steering response. With a failing suspension system, you will notice a drift or pull when turning corners, often accompanied by a knocking sound. This could be the effect of a damaged anti-roll bar no longer keeping the car stable against the force of the turn - a serious safety risk if left unchecked.

FAQS

  • What are the signs of a faulty suspension system?

    Common signs include:

    • Uneven tire wear
    • Excessive bouncing after hitting a bump
    • Difficulty steering or pulling to one side
    • Unusual noises like clunking or squeaking
    • A rough or uncomfortable ride
  • How often should my car’s suspension system be inspected?

It’s recommended to have your suspension checked every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or during regular vehicle maintenance. However, if you notice any issues, have it inspected immediately to avoid further damage.

  • Can I drive with a damaged suspension system?

While it's possible to drive with minor suspension issues, it’s not safe. A damaged suspension can affect steering, braking, and overall vehicle stability, increasing the risk of accidents.

  • What is included in a suspension repair service?

Suspension repair typically involves inspecting and replacing worn components such as shocks, struts, control arms, bushings, or ball joints. The service may also include wheel alignment to ensure optimal handling and tire wear.

  • How much does it cost to repair or replace a suspension system?

The cost varies depending on the type of vehicle, the extent of the damage, and the parts required. Minor repairs like replacing bushings may cost less, while replacing the entire suspension system can be more expensive. Contact us for a detailed quote.
